what is teamjess about?
TEAMJESS is a community running team that competed in two main race meetings in 2013to raise money for a little girl from Helpston. It has since grown to accommodate other fundraising activities to support this cause and other children with a similar condition.
Jessica Howard is now 5 and was born with a form of cerebral palsy. This means some of the nerves in her spine have been permanently damaged resulting in spasticity. This greatly limits normal movement in her arms and legs that would otherwise allow her to walk.
Jess' underlying condition will not improve over time, but there is an operation that she could have. In the UK it is possible that this could be received on the NHS under very stringent circumstances. If this is refused it would result in a trip to America at a cost of £50k when Jess is strong enough. Once completed, there would be extensive and expensive physio to follow up to ensure the maximum benefit is achieved.
This operation is on her spine and involves severing the spastic nerves and retaining the healthy ones. Once complete it will allow her brain to stimulate the healthy nerves correctly to generate the motor skills and muscle development to walk.
Jess is one of many children for whom this operation will be a life changing milestone. The growing team continues to raise money to ensue that Jess and other children have the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.
What better motivation to get involved or make a donation than to give a little girl the best chance to walk.
